The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
